Tucker Carlson interviews Vladimir Putin
-American news anchor Tucker Carlson is poised to unveil a highly anticipated interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, sparking concerns from the White House about providing a platform to the Russian leader.
Carlson, a former Fox News presenter recognized for his conservative viewpoints, announced that the interview would air at 23:00 GMT on his website and on social media platform X, where he hosts a show called "Tucker on X."
What do we know about Carlson’s interview with Putin?
- Confirming his presence in Moscow, Carlson stated on Tuesday that he was there to interview President Putin. In a video shared on X from what appeared to be a tower in Moscow, Carlson affirmed, “We’re in Moscow tonight. We’re here to interview the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.”
Known for criticizing the US media’s portrayal of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Carlson expressed his aim to counter what he termed as pro-Ukraine "fawning pep sessions" by Western media outlets covering the war.
The interview will be accessible on Carlson’s website and will also be shared "uncensored" on X. This marks Putin’s first formal interview with a Western journalist since the onset of the invasion of Ukraine nearly two years ago.
According to TASS news agency, Carlson spent several days in Moscow and reportedly expressed interest in interviewing Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The interview coincides with Democrats' upcoming efforts to restore US military funding to Ukraine, following the failure of an initial vote on a multibillion-dollar aid package due to opposition from the Republican Party.
Putin's last formal interview with a US media outlet occurred in October 2021.
Why is Carlson interviewing Putin?
- Carlson stated that the purpose of the interview is to provide Americans with insight into Russia's perspective on the war. "Two years into a war that’s reshaping the entire world, most Americans are not informed," he remarked in a four-minute video. "They have no real idea what’s happening in this region."
Asserting that most Americans are unaware of the reasons behind Putin's invasion of Ukraine or his current objectives, Carlson emphasized the importance of gaining knowledge on the matter. He clarified, "We are not here because we love Vladimir Putin … We are not encouraging you to agree with what Putin may say in this interview, but we are urging you to watch it. You should know as much as you can."
Carlson alleged that the Biden administration obstructed his attempts to interview Putin during his tenure at Fox News – a claim dismissed as "ridiculous" by the White House press secretary.
According to Russian authorities, Putin consented to the interview because Carlson presented an alternative perspective to the "one-sided" coverage of the Ukraine conflict by other news outlets. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked, "When it comes to the countries of the collective West, the large network media, TV channels, [and] large newspapers can in no way boast of even trying to at least look impartial in terms of coverage.
